Jen Harwood discusses her visit to Riverside Primary for their launch of the First Minister's Reading Challenge.
Riverside Primary in Stirling have enthusiastically taken on the First Minister’s Reading Challenge with a whole-school focus to maximise impact and include everyone on their exciting journey. I was lucky enough to be invited to attend their launch of the First Minister’s Reading Challenge for P4-7, which they combined with a Bookbug and Read, Write, Count gifting event for P1-P3. Their aim was to create a whole-school buzz about reading, involving parents and members of the community in the process. The school has both a Gaelic Education unit as well as an Autism Provision, making this a fantastic example of an inclusive approach.
I was able to experience first-hand the pupils’ energy and enthusiasm on the big day and it was a joy to see everyone so engaged in reading for pleasure. The launch event was vibrant, fun and brilliantly led by their Reading Reps. The fact that pupils were involved from the beginning in both the planning of the event and the school’s approach to the Reading Challenge, made it particularly meaningful and it was lovely to see such a great example of celebrating pupil voice. As the name of their lunchtime club suggests, they certainly are ‘Rocking Readers’.
This case study about Riverside’s reading journey so far and their plans for the rest of the Challenge was put together by Chrissie Gemmel and we think it highlights a fantastic whole-school approach which is both inclusive and pupil-led.
